Welcome to the Second Grade Page

Dear Second Grade Families,

As we start 3rd quarter: 2nd grade will no longer need to keep a reading log on the back of their homework sheet. On January 30, book report packets were sent home. Students will have until February 29 to complete two book reports.

In the month of February we will be working on Unit 3 of Social Studies which focuses on Our Government. In Science we will working on Unit C and looking at Earths Materials.

Reminders:

-We are focused on mastering our math and language art skills. Please continue to review your child’s work and correcting errors with them on a weekly basis. Studying math facts daily is essential to your child’s success.

-Sunday, February 5, 2012: Important meeting for parents regarding all information about First Communion. Location: Small Hall.

Sacramental Program

The sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion are received by the students during their second grade year at Mount Carmel School. This is a parish run program designed to be taught by the parents-the student’s primary educators. As their teacher, I assist in this preparation by assigning chapters to be completed. These are reviewed in class.
Reconciliation books should have been completed by Thanksgiving break. We are now completing the review pages with our third grade class prayer partners. All First Reconciliation books should be at school.
All of the students received their First Eucharist books. We have begun to work on these chapters. I am once again, assigning one chapter a week to be done at home and then reviewed in class. DO NOT do the review pages in the back. We will complete these with our third grade prayer partners before we receive First Holy Communion.

Homework

Every Monday the children receive homework for the week. Assignments are listed under the date due. The students practice responsibility by taking home the assigned work, doing the paperwork, studying for tests, reading, and returning their completed work on time. As parents, please check with your child that they have brought home everything they need and that the work your student does is correct. Help your child learn how to study for tests. I spread tests out throughout the week and tell the children days in advance so they can be well prepared. Encourage them to study a little every night so they are learning the information well instead of memorizing for the next day. When children are asked to reread or review material this can be used as their reading for the evening.
Homework should not be a chore. If your child is having trouble with any of the homework please let me know.

Sharing Days

The second graders have been assigned sharing on either Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Every child must share at least twice a month but may share every week if they wish. Before they are allowed to share they need to complete a Step Up to Writing Outline at home. This will help them prepare for their presentation. Learning to speak in front of a group is an important skill which sharing will help them to develop. Please assist your child at home with deciding on what to share and practicing how to deliver the information to their classmates.

Computers

I am encouraging the second grade students to practice their typing skills at home. During our Computer lab time we use a program called dancemattyping. To really improve their skills the students should work on typing at home. Please work with your child at home on doing this.
RAZ-Kids!!
I am sure you are all wondering what is this RAZ-Kids that your child keeps talking about? RAZ-Kids is an interactive reading tool for our students to practice reading fluency and comprehension. We have been spending the past couple of weeks in computers familiarizing the students with this website and have been encouraging them to explore RAZ-kids on their own at home. The students have a log in to get into their reading account.
LOG IN USERNAME: JScherbaa (Be careful for spelling! I think this is where most students have been having difficulties when trying to log in.)
Websites the students have been working on in class:

Scherba Store

We have a Second Grade Store. The children earn money during the day that they can then spend in our class store. The store is stocked by donated items such as small toys, party favors, pencils, stickers, etc.. The items are sold by parent volunteers who act as store clerks and help the children count, add, and subtract their money. The more volunteers the more the children get to practice their math skills. Thanks to all those that have offered to help. Please join in the fun – donate and come in to sell!
Students have plenty of money and it is time to start shopping! Parents you can start planning on coming in as early as Tuesday, October 11. Any time that the class is in session feel free to come in and OPEN SHOP! :)
